Newark Officer Killed, Teen Charged In Double Shooting: Officials

Authorities have charged a 14-year-old male and detained five others in connection with the shootings of Newark police officers that left Joseph Azcona dead and another officer critical, officials said.

Azcona, 26, a five-year veteran of the Newark Police Department, was killed in the line of duty during a shooting on Friday evening, March 7, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.

Another officer remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said. His name has not been released.

A spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office confirmed that two officers were shot just after 6:35 p.m. near Broadway and Carteret, and that one remained in critical condition at the time, declining to provide further details. Both officers were rushed to University Hospital, where one remains under medical care, officials said.

A 14-year-old male has been charged in connection with the shooting, authorities said. Officials also confirmed that the teen was shot and sustained non-life-threatening injuries, though investigators are still determining the circumstances of how he was shot.

Additionally, five people have been detained as part of the ongoing investigation, authorities said.

The New Jersey State PBA released the following statement:

"We here at the NJ State PBA are heartbroken to share that an officer from Newark PD has made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, and another officer is currently fighting for their life in critical condition. Please keep their families, fellow Newark PD officers, and our entire New Jersey law enforcement community in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time."

The Port Authority PBA also issued a statement expressing condolences:

"The members of the Port Authority PBA are sickened and saddened by the death of a Newark, New Jersey, police officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty Friday evening, March 7, 2025. We grieve with our Sisters and Brothers of the Newark Police Department and pray for the family of the fallen officer."

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Police Department continue to investigate the shooting.
